Finally got the motor back from the machine shop and got the car back together! Very happy with results. You can feel a little more vibration from the balance shaft delete and you can hear more exhaust noises because of the header.     no oil cooler is a death sentence on these engines. I was hitting 220F easily with a 19 row on your built 2.5 in a 20 min session (95F ambient).

    I love a good tear down. I’ll admit I’m impressed it got obliterated this bad, my turbo 2.0 (~300 WHP) had 1 broken rod and 3 bent rods and it was nowhere near as bad as this one. Something awful terrible happened to this poor thing.

    Finding this video was a life savor im bout to completely redo all the audio in my truck - the speaker wire because i dont sense a need to do that and was trying to find a way to not have to cut into the factory wire and this was exactly the answer i was looking for

    Is that the printer and plastic you used for your bleeder caps ? That was the first item that I purchased made by a printer that didn’t crumble to dust in a few months.

      Absolutely it is. I print those caps in 50% infill and ultra-fine quality so they're super strong and ready to use off of the printer bed.

    curious how you fare with the DEI heat shielding... I've got the same/EFR setup and it was very smoky after a first drive with the DEI fire blanket... I have since moved onto a heatsheild products sleeve (looks like header wrap). Congrats on the gameplan it seems very well thought out. Can't wait to see more. Also thanks for doing some R&D for the rest of us and sharing it!

      We've been using the same DEI tunnel shield product on customer builds for almost 8 years now. While it's a very good solution it's still not impervious. I can't speak to the quality of the Fire Blanket products as we haven't used those.

    After trying to install performance camshafts myself with no prior experience this video saved my life, redid the timing 3 different times while also checking and dealing with a handfull of other issues (100k mile engine) turns out the little (pump piece) in the rear main housing fell out and the car will NOT start at all without it. I was only able to find out where it went becuase of this video! Just watching through looking for something that looked similar! Now the car runs and drives on the new base map tune!

      Reducing the intake tract pre-turbo is likely where you’d gain them. It has lots of piping going on. The loudest turbo cars have very open turbos.

    While I was doing this I also used a clamp to compress the brake piston to flush some of the extra nasty fluid out. I just did it while the system is pressurized and the bleed valve is open.

    Great Video! I like that you don't fast-forward anything. I have a 2017 ND Miata with 80k miles. No track or street abuse. Will it have build-up like the one you did here? Is there anything you'd recommend doing besides regular oil changes? I'm not super knowledgeable on engines. The only thing I did to it is clean out the throttle body and do oil/filter changes. I take it easy on her but is it true that it's good for the engine to get the RPMs to redline every now and then in good conditions? Or is that just a myth?

      According to the Skyactiv Wikipedia they are all G motors, so same family.

Upon further reading, the 2.0 and 2.5, despite being part of the same family, do not share bore, stroke, and other dimensions such as exhaust manifold size and bolt spacing. (I figured this out, as a N/A 2.5 skyactiv engine has an aftermarket turbo header available, 2.0 engines like mine in my 2014 Mazda 3 do not.)

    Well it is done. It is not pretty but if I am doing 100 down the straight and you are 75 feet away, it looks OK. I was afraid that by the time I cleaned up my cut that it would be too big but instead it was tight. You should have never sucked me in to doing this but thanks for the help.

      I'm glad you tried! I used to cut these with an electric dremel and would have to take breaks because it would get so damn hot in my hands. The air grinder has been a godsend but I also have an 80Gal compressor on tap.
